Lloyd Marengo (NL) // Lloyds Company
Biography
Lloyd Marengo was born in Rotterdam in 1973. As a young boy, he came into contact with breakdance in the early eighties. At the age of seventeen, he performed his first show with the group ‘DCO’. By performing in clubs and dancing on the street, he became increasingly interested in the hip-hop scene.
His first business
He felt a need for a place where like-minded people could gather. That is why he started his own company, ‘Twilight’, in 1996, where like-minded people could work with dance, music, and graffiti. Two years later, the group 010Bboys was formed there. They started performing in community centers and clubs, after which large corporate parties and festivals soon followed. Here, Lloyd developed as a dancer and later as a choreographer. In 2002, he co-founded the Hiphophuis in Rotterdam.
From dancing to choreography
From 1999 onwards, he danced with the Scapino Ballet and Conny Jansen. At the Act Festival in 2004, Lloyd was given his first opportunity to showcase his talent as a choreographer with the production ‘French Connection’. Via the Kitchenette at Lantaren/Venster and Don’t Hit Mama by Theater Company Amsterdam in 2010, he reached the next rung of the ladder. There, he created two performances with world-class b-boys: the duet Tag and Father Father. This performance was the first from the Netherlands to appear at the hip-hop festival Breakin’ Convention. This was followed by the productions Loud! and Mind Ur Step. Lloyd Marengo stood out so much in the scene that he was asked to be a choreographer for the TV program So You Think You Can Dance.
By now, he is so well-known and experienced that he acts as a coach. He mentors various dancers and emerging creators, including Pim Jansen, Sheyda Darab, Luciano Jackson, Sheree Lenting, Redo Ait Chitt, and Justen Beer. Lloyd was commissioned to choreograph the production B-Boy (Maas Theater en Dans).
