Young Athena (UK)
Young Athena – Biography
The anomaly that is Young Athena, has a huge soulful voice that effortlessly transports you back to the Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald era, transitioning back to rapid fire raps and then smoothly delivering a Cardi B and Drake mashup she calls ‘Bodak Bling’. She is gifted with the confidence and talent to mix Soul with Grime and jazzy vocals, Drill with sweet R&B melodies blended with a bit of Dancehall and Hip Hop for good measure.
Raised by a mother that sang Opera music and a father that rapped over hardcore Hip Hop beats, Young Athena’s upbringing was in a household without music genre boundaries. This is where her diversity comes from and one of the driving forces that makes her the anomaly she is.
Aged 12 she wrote and produced ‘Be Who You Are’, her first track on SoundCloud. A self-aware conscious message broadcast on several Internet radio stations. Following up with ‘On Fleek’, an upbeat R&B Grime dance anthem for her peers which turned her into a local celebrity and had music executives arguing over who’s going to sign her first.
In 2017 aged 14 she went on to release a 17 track album called ‘Make It Back Home’ that featured two rappers as part of the music collective Emotive Frequency. This set her up for radio interviews and live shows gaining invaluable experiences.
During the global challenges that 2020 presented, lockdown in particular, Young Athena wrote and recorded over thirty songs developing her craft. Over this period Instagram provided a live platform for artists to express themselves to a captive audience. Young Athena took full advantage of this by performing four to five times every day on as many Instagram Live shows as possible, including SBTV, BBC1xtra, Hardest Bars, Déjà vu, and Fat Man Scoop to name a few, winning competitions on Ditto Music’s #Dittolive and Link Up TVs Talent Show. This gave her invaluable feedback, networking opportunities and music industry contacts.
In 2021 post lockdown armed with new material Young Athena released six singles and performed live at over 20 venues and did over 15 broadcast interviews from the contacts she made on Instagram. Some of the venues included, Box Park Shoreditch, Soho House Brixton, Fiddler’s Elbow Camden, Upstairs At The Ritzy Brixton, Deja Vu Create St. James Street and the Relief Festival. Appearing on Radio stations such as BBC London Radio, BBC West Midlands Radio, BBC Introducing, Riverside Radio, Excitement Radio (USA Miami), Deja Vu, Conscious FM and GY Radio. Worked with Vocal Networking, Vibez With Us (releasing an exclusive track with them ‘Wrong And Right’).
Young Athena closed 2021 with two huge achievements over a period of three days back to back, her first headline show with Vibez With Us Showcase delivering a 40 minute set that was absolutely amazing. The next 2 days at the Brit School she delivered a powerful rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ and Stormzy’s ‘Crown’ for the Brit School ‘Brit is Born and Tribute to Knebworth 1990’ which had members of the audience in tears.
Young Athena’s musical influences come from social issues, teenage love, coming of age hurdles, internet memes, learning about herself, Instagram and Snapchat gossip, boys, girls talk, hairstyles and everything about being a young teen growing up in London. She is inspired by Etta James, Beyoncé, Ms Banks, Solange and Queen to name a few. She is working hard on releasing new music with visuals, preparing for her next live performances and in talks with major music industry figures exploring a world of possibilities.
To summarize Young Athena’s message into a single statement she always says “I make female empowerment music that men can take something from”.
