Born and raised in Havana’s 10 de Octubre neighborhood, El Individuo is a bourgeoning voice from Cuba’s underground Latin American hip hop scene with the authentic percussive rhythms of Cuban jazz, offering lyrics that are proudly Afrocuban and beats that are unmistakably of Havana. His debut EP, Soy, pushes the boundaries of what Latin American hip hop can be. While historically being heavily influenced by East-Coast 90’s era rap, the beats and flow in 2018 have the potential to feel familiar and flat. El Individuo breaks this realm to create something that feels more true to Cuban and Latin American youth – a meditative reflection on the self through clever flows and danceable Caribbean-infused melodies and percussion. The rapper is no overtly political, and instead chooses to critique the psychic and societal structures which surround him.
